Mark S. : Hi Lisa, how can I help?
Mark S. : Are you still there Lisa?
Lisa : Hello! I hope you are well! I’m just seeking a bit of help really. My ex partner of nine years has just left me. He’s got a serious gambling problem and again has relapsed. This is the first time I’ve refused to give him financial support. His behaviour and manner towards me has become so vile, it’s like 9 years mean nothing. He owns a flat so has packed all his stuff…
Lisa : I’m really worried about his serious behavioural changes and I just don’t know what to do? I try and reach out and he says he hates me, we’ve grown apart and I just need to get on with my life without him. We live in rented accommodation but he’s gone up to Aberdeen. All the bills come out my bank account and he’s refusing to pay for anything sadly. I will just about survive financially, but is it possible to pull him out of this black hole he is in?
Mark S. : Hi Lisa, I’m sorry to hear this but I do feel that you have done the right thing as you can only take so much and he needs to learn that he cannot treat you like this, he needs also to get along to a meeting so that we can help him, I hope you are okay?
Lisa : I’m seriously worried about his mental state. He’s not suicidal, if anything he’s acting as if being separate from me is the best thing in the world and that I’m the reason he relapsed..
Lisa : I am as okay as I can be. I just can’t believe the change in his behaviours. If he doesn’t want to be with me I will get through that in time, but I just can’t believe he appears completely out of control just now. I can’t understand how he’s acting so happy :(
Lisa : Thank you for asking about me though, it’s appreciated!
Mark S. : This is due to the fact that you have refused to give him money, but by continuing to give him money is enabling him to gamble.
Lisa : I know this sounds daft, but I presume he can’t be helped unless he wants it? I made him download gamstop and that’s when he snapped and literally ran away to Aberdeen
Lisa : I feel like all I’ve done is enable him by having all bills in my name. We used to live in England but I moved back first, hence why it’s all in my name. I feel so silly now for not realising that’s enabled him!
Mark S. : There is a meeting in Aberdeen on Saturday morning but he needs to want to go, we have a sister fellowship called Gamanon that can support you if you wanted this?
Mark S. : You may feel better speaking to someone?
Lisa : I will send the details, you never know. All I want for him is to find peace within himself and finally beat this terrible illness!
Mark S. : Gascotland.org
Lisa : I will definitely look into them. I think I need to, especially given I’m now left alone with the house and bills!
Mark S. : This is the website address and all meeting times and addresses are on here.
Mark S. : I can have a member of Gamanon call you tomorrow for a chat if you like?
Lisa : That would be great!! Thank you!
Mark S. : What’s your number and where are you based at the moment?
Lisa : 07506744467. I’m in Larkhall near Hamilton
Mark S. : No problem at all, I will pass this on to a Gamanon member to support you.
Lisa : Thank you. You’ve been really supportive and helpful, I’m so grateful! Thank you!!
Mark S. : Your very welcome, take care and I hope things get sorted out for you.
